Strategy Sessions

Not every challenge requires a full engagement. Sometimes you need a focused conversation with someone who understands the complexity of your work, can help you think through a specific problem, and will give you honest, practical guidance.

Whether you're navigating a difficult board dynamic, (re)thinking through a program around reentry or disability, working through burnout, or exploring what it would mean to launch something new, we’re here to partner alongside you.

Strategy sessions are a good fit if you:

  • Have a specific leadership question or challenge you need help thinking through

  • Are exploring a new idea and want a thought partner before committing to a direction

  • Are in between larger engagements but need focused support right now

  • Want to get a feel for how we work before pursuing a longer engagement

  • Are a leader who would benefit from dedicated space to think, reflect, and plan

How it works:

Strategy sessions are focused, practical, and built around your specific needs. We'll talk through your situation, identify core questions, and work through them together — leaving you with perspective, concrete next steps, and a sense of your own capacity to address the challenge.

Sessions can be one-time or ongoing, depending on what's most useful for you. We'll figure out the right format during our intro call.

Focus areas

Burnout and Leader Wellbeing

Burnout in nonprofits should never be equated to a personal failure. Instead, we approach burnout from an understanding of both brain science and systems thinking. We help leaders understand what's driving their burnout, what's within their control to change, and how to build sustainable, restorative systems into their organizations to prevent burnout from accumulating within themselves and their teams.

Board Dynamics

From preparing for a difficult board conversation to navigating a dysfunctional governance structure, we help executive directors think through their board relationships. We offer a sounding board and relational strategies that can improve board relations and decrease stressful dysfunction at the board level. Topics include board prep, navigating board relationships, and building toward collaborative governance that centers restorative practices of trust, accountability, and repair, when needed.

Program Development

We offer focused strategy support for leaders developing new programs or strengthening existing ones. Our experience spans several specialized areas:

  • Reentry programming — Developing holistic programs that center restorative justice from its program design to its delivery, we believe system-impacted people must guide and lead. The reentry ecosystem is essential to the social fabric for community members coming home after incarceration. As such, we partner with a close collaborator who is currently incarcerated and well-versed in the reentry space to advise these programs.

  • Peacebuilding programming — Designing programs that address conflict at its roots and create pathways toward sustainable peace, with an emphasis on relationship-building, community voice, and restorative approaches to conflict transformation. We help leaders think through how peacebuilding principles can be translated into practical programs that strengthen trust, build local capacity, and support communities navigating conflict, division, or harm.

  • Truth and reconciliation programming — Supporting communities considering truth-telling processes or formal Truth & Reconciliation Commissions, with an emphasis on trauma-informed design, community voice, and meaningful pathways toward accountability and repair. We help leaders think through the purpose, structure, and implementation of these processes. We partner closely with an international expert on transitional justice and human rights who has directly advised multiple national-level truth commissions, along with other collaborators with US-based experience.

  • Leadership programming — Designing programs that support emerging or existing leaders to become those who prioritize wellbeing; execute strategy; listen with care; engage with restorative practices such as trustbuilding, accountability, and repair; and, design systems that sustainably support ongoing positive social impact.

  • Disability programming — Building programs that promote belonging, are genuinely inclusive, and designed with disabled communities, not just for them, modeling the disability community’s motto: “Nothing about us without us.”
