Restorative Systems Change

We partner with organizations through culture change utilizing a multi-pronged approach of restorative justice, disability inclusion, trauma-informed and healing-centered approaches, as well as organizational development. Too often, we find that supportive accountability, organizational harm repair, and trustbuilding are crucial missing pieces of healthy organizational systems.

We want to provide some off-the-shelf material for you and your team to learn at your own pace about key elements which are helpful in creating a restorative workplace.

Restorative Systems Change: Disability Inclusion for Nonprofits

Journey with us through one course or the full 5-part series on restorative systems change from a disability inclusion standpoint. Learn how your nonprofit organization can shift its mindset, policies, and practices to become a place of belonging, where talented disabled staff can thrive.

You’ll hear from founder, Jena Kitchen, who is a person with disabilities, as well as from other nonprofit leaders, both disabled and nondisabled alike, on what can happen when we transform our systems and cultures from the inside out.

Foundations of Disability Rights & Disability Justice

This course grounds you in the Disability Rights Movement's legacy, an overview of pertinent disability legislation, and contemporary disability justice frameworks before equipping you with practical tools to transform your organization.

You'll explore the Social vs. Medical Model of Disability and terminology through real relationship stories (including moments of getting it wrong and learning better), examine employment data that reveals systemic gaps, and center the experiences of multiply marginalized disabled people often left out of mainstream inclusion conversations.

Through video clips, interviews, personal narratives, and structured reflection prompts, you'll build both the historical context and the relational humility required to begin the work of designing with belonging in mind.

First Impressions: Build Belonging from the Beginning

Belonging starts before day one. It's shaped by the job posting a candidate can or can't view, the interview that does or doesn't accommodate them, and the culture they sense long before they're hired. Yet, a culture of belonging must go deeper than accommodation for it to be genuine.

You'll hear directly from disabled leaders and professionals about what belonging feels like and what it costs when it's absent; examine employment data revealing gaps that deepen at the intersections of disability, race, and gender; and confront the complicated reality of disability disclosure in workplaces that haven't yet earned trust. We unpack concrete strategies for organizations from accessible job descriptions to inclusive interviewing.

Through video clips, interviews, personal narratives, interactive surveys, and organizational reflection prompts, you'll come away with both the mindset, heartset, and practical tools needed to build a workplace where disabled talent belongs.

Maintenance Mode: Establish Regular Rhythms of Inclusion

This course focuses on practical ways to shift your organization’s everyday rhythms to become more inclusive of talented disabled workers. Everything from onboarding and team meetings to events, accommodations, and performance reviews. We also look at the role of leader and other staff members to create a culture where access needs are a regular part of conversation, not something employees are required disclose a diagnosis to receive.

You will hear directly from disabled leaders and advocates as we share what works, what doesn't, and what it feels like when workplaces get it wrong. You will also learn how to respond when harm inevitably happens, because it will, and how honest conversation and repair can strengthen your team instead of fracturing it.

By the end of this course, you will have practical tools and reflection prompts to help your nonprofit move past compliance and toward a workplace culture where disabled staff genuinely belong and thrive alongside nondisabled staff.

Transform Culture & Systems at the Executive Level

This course is about restorative systems change through a disability inclusion lens, built for executive leaders at nonprofits and foundations who want to shift culture. We start with data on disabled leaders and what it tells us about the systems they're operating in. From there we look at the board's role in supporting those leaders.

Instead of treating burnout as a personal failing, we look at the factors driving burnout among executive leaders and ask: how do we design a culture that supports staff and leaders in the first place, so we're preventing burnout instead of just reacting to it?

We explore how to stay sustained in social impact work. Yet, sometimes the hard truth is that an organization may not be a healthy place for a leader to be, so we make room to talk through when it may be time to step away.

You'll come away with reflective prompts and tactical ideas for shifting culture at various levels of an organization, from the position of an executive leader who wants to build a workplace where talented disabled workers belong as part of the entire team.

Transform Culture & Systems at the Board Level

How can your nonprofit live out its values unless its board is doing the same? The way in which board members show up for each other, and for your executive director, shapes whether your organization leans toward burnout or toward a culture where all people can actually thrive.

This course looks at who holds decision-making power on nonprofit boards right now, with data on disability, race, gender, and sexuality. From there, you'll work through a board self-assessment focused on the health of your board's culture, revisit the core roles and legal duties of the board, and dig into the connection between board support and executive burnout. You'll also explore how nondisabled board members can be genuine partners in this work, and why both intention and impact matter.

You'll come away with practical ideas you can bring to your next board meeting. Regardless of whether your organization focuses on disability advocacy or not, this course will help your board build a culture that supports your leaders and lives out your values.
